Toilet Training Junior

Junior is not 2 years and 4 months old. About 3 months ago I started his toilet training and now he is 99.99% trained.

Toilet Trainer
I started with buying a toilet trainer similar to the one to the left, but whenever I put him on the toilet he would cry. I therefore bought this one (below) which he felt more comfortable with as he could climb up/down himself.

Toilet Trainer

To begin with I would just let him sit for 5 minutes on it daily with his pants off, to get him used to it. Nothing would happen, he would just sit there and play with me for 5 min and then get off.

After a week of this I started making “pssshhh” noises while running slightly cold water on his little “junior”. On the second day of doing this he peed. And I made sure to act very positive and awarded him with letting him flush the toilet. This gave him a clear idea, that if he pees in the toilet he can flush the toilet afterwards.

I continued with this for another week and then additionally started asking him 3-4 times during the evening (after he came home from nursery) “Do you need to pee ?”. This continued for another 2 weeks where he would get more confident in when he needed to pee and when he didn’t. The interval of peeing accidents also became longer and longer.

After this when the peeing was nearly in place I started with the pooha. I knew the time he does his pooha (he only does it once daily), so I would just ask him around that time and take him to the bathroom. 1 week of this and he was completely toilet trained with the exception that he still wore a nappy at night at in nursery.

After training him at home I involved the nursery, however the nurses were a bit hesitant as they simply didn’t have the manpower to take kids to the toilets regularly. However after consistent persuasion (nagging) they eventually gave in and would take him to the toilet 2-3 times during his stay at the nursery daily.

Some time after this he got completely into the routine and would come to me (or the nurses at the nursery) and tell if he had to go. As of today he has not wore his nappy for 2 weeks for the whole day. He still wears a nappy during night, however I will soon also remove that as he had not have any accidents during night.

So there you go, above is the recipe of how I toilet trained my son. I hope you find it useful.
