Introducing Solid Food

My son is now around 5 months old, and I’ve slowly started to introduce solid food. I started with giving him milk and then a little solid food. After 2 weeks of this, I started to give him solid food, and then after 30 minutes give him milk. In most cases he wasn’t hungry for milk until an hour later. I give him solid food 1-2 times a day (1 of the meals before bed time).

I’ve tried the following foods with variable success.

  • Boiled and mashed broccoli - He didn’t like or dislike it. Most of it went on his bib.
  • Boiled and mashed carrot – He made funny faces eating this, I don’t think he liked it.
  • Boiled and mashed potatto – He liked it.
  • Boiled and mashed pear – He loved it. If I took too long to give him the next spoon he would get impatient and start making sounds, to notify me to give him some more.
  • Mashed banana – His favorite so far. I think the sweetness and that it melts in his mouth made this really successful.

I went to the grocery store to see what combinations of baby food were being sold so I could replicate the ingredients. I don’t want to feed him off-the-shelf stuff, so I’ll continue feeding him fresh baby food.

I’ve still got to try cabbage, pees and other vegetables. I asked my mother, and she told me to be careful with cabbage/broccoli/potatoes as they can give gas in the stomach. She told me to combine these vegetables with other vegetables, and also give him some gripe water when giving him one of these. As you know from my previous post Stomach Gas - A Bigger Problem Than You Think, my son has had severe gas problems, but that was mainly the first 2 months.

Additionally I was told not to feed him banana too often as it can lead to constipation.

Also at last, I’ve notices that his left-overs has started to become more chunky and less liquidy due to the addition of solid food (if anyone out there is interested).

How fun solids are…. I am starting bub number 3 on solids at the moment as he’s just turned 6 months… I can’t get him to eat off the shelf food if I try,,,, he sooks until I blend him up some of whatever we are eating. Last night he had pasta bake with capsicum, mushroom, onion and bacon….. I thought it might be a little strong for his stomach, but he liked it…. It is such a journey but so enjoyable watching their faces and reactions. Good Luck :)

    Hi,

Yes they sure have some funny reactions. My son has a funny habit of blowing air once he’s full. So when i’ve got baby food all over the carpet, myself and the wall, I stop feeding him.

With regards to meat, i’m currently only giving him vegetables. Will introduce meat in a months time or so…

    best regards,
    Mama
